LETTER OF THE LAW

The first three papers that were put on the web site were about the “word” Law in the Bible, so now we have a clear picture of that word.  Now a phase, “Letter of the Law”, has come into play when we have the full understanding of the word Law.

Let’s start in Romans where Paul was talking about our members (bodies).

Romans 6: 13, 14

And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God” (verse 14 pulls this into our law writings.) “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”  Alright Church, let’s go back to the Cross to understand our position here.

When our Lord Jesus Christ paid the Blood Price on the Cross for our sins, we were made righteous through His sacrifice. But since we do not have our Glorified Bodies as of yet we are still under the “fleshly” laws of man; unless they go against God’s Laws, which are written on our hearts. (Romans 2: 15)

When the veil was torn from top to bottom, at Christ’s death in God’s Temple, the Sin that separated us from God was broken by Christ’s Blood sacrifice. Therefore the “Letter of the Law” given to Moses was fulfilled with the New Covenant of Christ.

        O. K. Church, now let’s go to the Word and get scripture to back this up.  In Romans and II Corinthians Paul expounded on the “letter” of the ‘letter of the law’.  But before I actually get into the scriptures let’s get the meaning of the words “letter of the law” from the Bible Dictionary: “The letter of the law (Law of Moses=Torah) signifies the whole body of Mosaic legislation. (I Kings 2:3; II Kings 23: 25; Ezra 3:2.)”  These laws written on stone were given to Moses for God’s People Israel at the time; they would set them apart from the Gentiles who were steeped in various adulterous god’s rules themselves. (God’s People are God’s People because they are set apart in righteousness.)

Figuratively speaking, “The letter is used by the apostle Paul in opposition to the Spirit (Romans 2: 27, 29; 7:6; II Corinthians 3: 6-7) In general “letter” is used to denote the Mosaic Law, and mere external obedience thereto.”

Let’s go back to Paul now in Romans and II Corinthians.  In Romans 2:17-29, Paul was taking about circumcision, in the natural, because the Jews said you can’t be one of God’s people unless you were circumcised, it was the “Law”.  In these verses Paul was explaining that the Jews were not obeying the Law of Moses.

Romans 2: 25-29: (E.B.)

If you follow the law, your circumcision has meaning.  But if you break the law, it is as if you were never circumcised.  If those who are not circumcised do what the law says, it is as if they were circumcised.  Those who are not circumcised in their bodies, but still obey the law, will pass judgment on you who, though having the written law and circumcision, break the law.  They can do this because a person is not a true Jew if he is only a Jew in his physical body; true circumcision is not only on the outside of the body.  A person is a Jew only if he is a Jew inside; true circumcision is done in the heart by the Spirit, not by the written law.  Such a person gets praise from God rather than from people.” (God’s Law-man’s law)

In II Corinthians Paul is talking about the New Covenant with God’s People after His Son, Jesus Christ, paid the Blood Sacrifice on the Cross.

II Corinthians 3: 6-8 (E.B.)

He made us able to be servants of a new agreement from Himself to His People. ( Jeremiah 31: 31; Luke 22:20) This new agreement (covenant) is not a written law (letter of the law), but it is of the Spirit.  The written law (letter) brings death, but the Spirit gives life.  (Our willingness to serve the God Who made us, that gave His Son for our sins!) The law that brought death was written in words on stone.  It came with God’s Glory, which made Moses’ face so bright that the Israelites could not continue to look at it.  But that glory later disappeared (faded).  So surely the New Way that brings the Spirit has even more Glory.”

Church we, as Born Again Children of God, have that same Spirit living and abiding “in” us that was given to the apostles at Pentecost.  When Jesus paid the Price on the Cross for our sins; we were allowed to combine the Old Law (Letter of the Law) with the New Law—God’s Law written on our hearts where no one can take it from us!

It is all a matter of us trusting, believing and having the Faith to accept our Creator God unconditionally.

Thank You, Father, for Your Love, Mercy, and Compassion on this lost and dying world.  Help me to be a willing vessel for Your People to “see” Your Glory in all things. Use me in ‘Your Plan’ for forever!”  Can we say Amen to this, Church?  I pray I can and will, how about you?  It all starts with:
