And our journey through it.
Bread of Life
Greetings Church. Today in my quiet time with the Lord, I was lead to John chapter 6. We all know the story of Jesus feeding 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two small fish, but what happened after that miracle? The people wanted to come and take Him by force to make Him ‘king’, but it was not Jesus’ TIME yet so He went up into the mountains to pray. (John 6:15) Yet the crowd was still seeking Him.
John 6:24
“when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.” When next the people saw Jesus they asked Him why He left them. This was His answer:
John 6: 26-27
“Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” (Acts 2:22)
Church, just as we are doing sometimes today, we are looking in and at the natural signs and circumstances in situations. The people filled their bellies with physical food and were satisfied—but it was the ‘spiritual signs’ that were supposed to be observed. Who Jesus was and what He was trying to teach them. They then asked Jesus, “What shall we do that we may work the works of God?” (v28)
John 6:29
“Jesus answered and said to them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.’”
There, Church, is the TRUST and BELIEVING that God wants from His Children. A pure TRUST and BELIEF in God’s Son-Jesus Christ. Not because we ‘see’ miracles but that we Believe in Him Who is the ‘Miracle Worker’; Who takes away our sins.
Now the people were still looking at the natural, physical circumstances when they asked their next questions:
John 6:30-31
“Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? Our Fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” (Psalm 78:24)
In other words Church, they were saying to Jesus, we’re not going to just take You at Your Word—prove it to us! Let’s pause for a minute and look at what was just said—in unbelief. Are “we” sometimes doing the same with God’s Word ourselves? The Bible “IS” God’s Word—Jesus Christ. Do we believe it? Or do we want to have it PROVED to us by some miracle to be “seen” or “heard” in the physical instead of TRUSTING and BELIEVING in the God of Creation? Think about that, Saints!
O. K. Church, listen carefully to Jesus’ answer to them:
John 6:32-33
“Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the ‘TRUE’ bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He Who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
True Bread—True Life—Jesus Christ
I believe the people-still thinking in the natural-wanted Jesus to give them this “living” bread, hence:
Verse 34
“Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
What an opening for the Gospel! In verses 35-40 Jesus, Himself, explains the Gospel and Who the Bread of Life is:
John 6: 35-40 (Listen with your heart here, Church)
“And Jesus said to them, “I am the Bread of life. He who comes to Me shall NEVER hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe.”
The people came to Him and actually saw Him increase the food so they could eat. They were looking at Him but mostly the food to eat. They really didn’t “see” spiritually the MAN/God. That’s why Jesus continued explaining plainly Who He was:
Verse 37
“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one (each of us individually) who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. For I have comedown from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who went Me. This the will of the Father who sent me, that all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that “EVERYONE” who “sees” (spiritually) the Son and believes IN Him may have EVERLASTING LIFE; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
The last days are here now, Church. They have been here since Christ died and rose again! We need to wake up and partake of this Bread of Life. It is the ONLY thing that will get us through these last days.
Saints, do not stop reading there in John chapter 6. Christ—The Word—is the Bread of Life. Jesus, Himself, mentioned this “TRUTH” at least 7 more times through out this chapter, that’s not counting the other portions of the Bible that it has been mentioned. The how’s and why’s are all there, read from your hearts, Church. Now at the end of Jesus’ sermon some of his disciples refused to walk with Him any more. (John 6:66) Some of them couldn’t take the ‘TRUTH’ because of their unbelief and were offended by Jesus saying, “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His Blood, you have no life in you.” (John 6:53)
Jesus’ Flesh and Jesus’ Blood “are” the Spiritual Bread of Life.
Conclusion:
John 6:63
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The Words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are Life.”
