Israel's Legacy

2 Samuel 7:1-29

Good morning, Church. As I was reading The Word this morning I came across God’s covenant with David, very interesting! I’d like to share what the Bible and Pastor Hagee says about that Covenant, Davidic Covenant, if I may. We’ll start in 2 Samuel chapter 7 first; which also “seems” to be repeated in I Chronicles 17: 1-2 but Pastor Hagee explains what “seems” to be a repeat of 2 Samuel in his introduction of I Chronicles.

“The books of First and Second Chronicles cover the same period of Jewish history described in Second Samuel through Second Kings, but the perspective is different. These books are no mere repetition of the same material, but rather form a divine editorial on the history of God’s people. While Second Samuel and First and Second Kings give a political history of Israel and Judah, First and Second Chronicles presents a religious history of the Davidic dynasty of Judah. The former are written from a prophetic and moral viewpoint, and the latter from a priestly and spiritual perspective. The Book of First Chronicles begins with the royal line of David and then traces the spiritual significance of David’s righteous reign.”

I believe God wants us to understand “ALL” perspectives of His Word.

Let’s go back to 2 Samuel again and see what is happening. As I’ve said before, Pastor Hagee has sub-titles through out the Word and chapter 7 of Second Samuel has the sub-title of “David is Forbidden to Build God a House.”

In verses 1-3, David is so overwhelmed with gratitude for what God has given to him and Israel that he says, (talking to the prophet Nathan) “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.” Nathan first says to the King, “Go do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.” But in verse 4 the prophet, Nathan gets a word from the Lord for David. It was the Covenant to David—The Davidic Covenant. We need to stop and read verses 4-17 for ourselves here, Saints. (Always have your Bible near to confirm what is being said by a writer or speaker, Church.)

This was David’s part of the legacy for Israel. God’s EVERY Word here was and still is being fulfilled! Praise God!

     O. K. Now Saints, this next part was Pastor Hagee’s words to explain and shed more light on the Davidic Covenant. I’ll need to write it all out for you to help us all understand why I said in the beginning of this paper, “I thought God’s Covenant with David was very interesting.”

     Pastor Hagee’s explanation of 2 Samuel 7: 4-17:

“The Covenant with David is the fourth of the theocratic covenants (pertaining to the rule of God). In this covenant David is promised three things: (1) a land forever (v.10); (2) an unending dynasty (vv. 11,16); and (3) an everlasting kingdom (vv. 13,16). The birth of Soloman, David’s son who is to succeed him, is predicted (v. 12). His particular role is to establish the throne of the Davidic Kingdom forever (v. 13). His throne continues, though his seed is cursed in the person of Jeconiah (Coniah), who was the king under whom the nation was carried captive to Babylon. Jeremiah prophesies that no one whose genealogical descent could be traced back to David through Jeconiah and Solomon would ever sit on David’s throne (Jeremiah 22:24-30). (That Church, surprised me because how could Jesus be in the lineage of David if that was so? “Read On”) Joseph, the legal, but not physical, father of Jesus traces his lineage to David through Jeconiah (Matthew 1:1-17). David however, had another son, Nathan. His line was not cursed. Mary, the physical mother of Jesus, traces her lineage back to David through Nathan (Luke 3: 23-38). Notice the care and the extent to which God goes to keep His Word and to preserve its truthfulness. The virgin birth was absolutely essential not only to assure the sinless character of Jesus but also to fulfill the Davidic Covenant. Jesus receives His “blood right” to David’s throne through His earthly mother, Mary, and His “legal right” to David’s throne through His adoptive earthly father, Joseph. The virgin birth guarantees that one of David’s line will sit on David’s throne and rule forever, while at the some time preserving intact the curse and restriction on the line of descent through Jeconiah.”

How awesome is that, Saints! God’s Plan in the writing of Creation through His Word! Church, this whole web site is about God’s Plan, that Plan has been going on since God Created it. Reading, studying and listening to God’s Spirit “IN” us is the essential part of our part here on earth. God wants “NO ONE” left behind! Israel’s legacy is our legacy, Saints! The Jew and Gentile have only “ONE” Shepherd—Jesus Christ. ( John 10:15-16) Doesn’t that make your heart leap with JOY Unspeakable---it does mine! Where do we start to have this JOY? By:
