Adultery

When Jesus spoke about adultery, He also took these words straight from the Old Testament.

Exodus 20:14
            “You shall not commit adultery.”
Deuteronomy 5:18
            “you shall not commit adultery.”

Matthew 5:27-30 (Jesus speaking)
27        “You have heard that it was said, “You shall not commit adultery.”
28        “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has                        already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

I’d like to stop here a minute before I go on and finish the rest of the verses in Matthew. In verse 28 Christ is talking about the condition of the heart not the actual action of the body – yet. Looking at a woman in lust is already a sin because the mind can be used by Satan to pull the physical body into the action of sin. “Self-centered” desires. So, allowing your mind to accept the “thought-sin” leads to the “actual sin.” Here is where you trust God’s Spirit when He prompts you to rebuke the enemy’s wiles.  Immediately refuse the temptation to even think in that direction and ask forgiveness for the error in thought. Then thank the Lord for His presence “in” you.

The next verses are about what we need to do and the consequences of our actions if we pursue in our sinful actions. Christ speaks in an allegory (a story made up to present ideas in a concrete vivid way).

29        “And if your right eye causes you to sin, (stumble or offend) pluck it                        out and cast it  from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of                    your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.”
30        “And if your right hand causes you to sin, (stumble or offend) cut it off                   and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your                   members perish than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Both of these verses are not to be taken in a literal way, but with your spirit heart and will. Jesus is not telling us to actually harm ourselves, because that would go against God’s Love for His creation. In fact it would fall right into Satan’s plan for mankind of harming us in rituals that were done in early days to please other gods.

I believe Jesus is trying to tell us that the sin/offence of adultery is not to be taken lightly. In the allegory of your right eye causing you to sin, pluck it out and if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you is telling us as in Colossians 3:5,we are to put off the Old Man and put on the New Man.

Colossians 3:5
5          Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth;                                 fornication, uncleanness passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is             idolatry.
Also:
Romans 8:13
13        For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you               put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Also:
Romans 6:13
13        And do not present your members as instruments/weapons of                                 unrighteousness to sin, but present yourself to God as being alive from                 the dead (former self) and your members as instruments of                                     righteousness to God.

When we become born again, in Christ, we are putting away the Old person we were and taking on the new “God-filled” person! We are new creatures in Christ; we are supposed to die to self and live for Christ. Christ literally died for us so we can die to self and be born again “in” Him! Think about it church; we are to live as Christ here on earth did to be able to live with Christ and our Father for all of eternity.

Here in this lesson we were talking about adultery but this TRUTH is also for all our sins committed before God. Acknowledge our sins before God and ask forgiveness then turn from that sin.
