And our journey through it.
Divorce
Now we have already talked about adultery and what causes it – lust of the flesh. Which we already know is a sin and is a major cause of divorce. But Jesus takes us a step further when He talked about marriage and divorce.
Mark 10:2-12
2 The Pharisees came and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” testing Him.
3 And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?”
4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her.”
5 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this command.
6 but from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. (Genesis 1:27)
7 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
8 and the two shall become ONE flesh; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh.”
9 “Therefore what God has joined together let not man separate.”
In the beginning God made Adam and took him and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And in Genesis 2:18-25 God tells how He began His family. This was before the fall of mankind.
Genesis 2:18
18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. (*God gave us our own wills) And whatever Adam called each living creature that was its name.
20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place.
22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
23 And Adam said; “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
That states plainly that the union is indissoluble. And the “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” resulted in what has become known as the universal law of marriage.
So the union of man and a woman is a divine state. It was never made to be compromised by divorce or adultery or fornication. But when sin came and tempted Adam and Eve it hardened their hearts to the universal blessing of marriage. God gave mankind his own will and he alone made his choice to say yes to sin and no to God. It then took God’s Son, Jesus, thousands of years later to correct and turn that Sin around so we could be allowed back into God’s family through His love and Mercy.
Bottom line – divorce is still a sin and needs forgiveness. So lets go back and do this right so we don’t have to go through that mess. If both man and woman seek God diligently in the first place, He will lead and guide them in the correct path for true happiness as a couple He put together.
Now in verses 10-12 it deals with the results of divorce.
10 And in the house His disciples asked Him again about the same matter.
11 So Christ said to them “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.”
12 “and if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.
That is the TRUTH in the WORD!
Think about it!
